Getting ready to tackle Programming Language Pragmatics

Part of my next big off-hours project will involve processing source code. I have limited experience with compilers and kin so this is the perfect opportunity. I've read about the Dragon Book and it looked more theoretical than I wanted. Programming Language Pragmatics seemed like a good alternative. It's almost 900 pages and chock full of content. Looking at the breadth and depth of the material it covers is a little intimidating. However, I think it will be worth it for this current project and hopefully add some shiny new tools to the Nerd Belt.

The book has 15 chapters in four parts and additional content on a CD. Exercises and "explorations" follow each section. The self-study path through the book looks like it will take a year. We'll have to see how my many obligations affect that pace. Ideally I'll make it through part one before the end of the calendar year, but realistically well, we'll see...
